Challenge

The aim was to create a sophisticated home that still felt relaxed and family-friendly. The ground floor was originally divided into three separate rooms — kitchen, dining room, and living room. Both the dining and living areas suffered from limited natural light, and the living room felt disconnected from the kitchen, making everyday life and entertaining less fluid.

We wanted to reuse existing furniture wherever possible, while also introducing more seating for family and friends. The priority was to ensure the space worked practically for day-to-day living — from relaxed family time to social gatherings and games.

Concept

The key design move was to open up the ground floor, knocking through the existing layout to create one large, multifunctional space, while still maintaining distinct zones through a “broken plan” approach. Large glazed doors were added to the kitchen to draw in natural light from the south, instantly brightening the space and creating a stronger connection to the garden.

To bring warmth and balance, I developed a palette of warm neutrals paired with earthy greens. This timeless scheme created a calm backdrop that complemented the architecture of the home. Existing furniture was reupholstered and thoughtfully paired with new pieces, balancing sustainability with a fresh aesthetic. In the living area, darker panelling on the lower walls created a cocooning, intimate feel, while lighter tones above helped reflect natural light and keep the space airy.

Bespoke cabinetry was introduced in the lounge to provide much-needed storage. To avoid a rigid look, soft curves were incorporated into the detailing, adding elegance and softness. In the kitchen, pale flooring was chosen to maximise brightness and ensure the space felt open rather than enclosed.

Throughout the scheme, layered textures and carefully considered luxury touches — from lighting to finishes — elevated the design, while keeping it comfortable, durable, and family-friendly.

Outcome

The redesign completely transformed the ground floor, turning it into a functional, characterful, and welcoming home. The balance of sophistication and everyday practicality produced a space that feels stylish yet comfortable — a place where they can relax, entertain, and enjoy time together as a family.
